Ligetian Variation #12 (Ad Infinitum - in memoriam of Conlon Nancarrow)

from LIGETIAN VARIATIONS & Other Counterpoints for Automatic Piano by Riccardo Massari Spiritini

/

about

This is a piece I want to to dedicate to the memory of Conlon Nancarrow, one of the greatest masters of counterpoint in history.
A humble contribute to the art of counterpoint for automatic piano.

I utilized the elements of Ligeti's Musica Ricercata 7 for the three lines that form this entire composition.
The bass line is a flux of randomly generated fourths that follows a up-and-down wavelike movement through all the piece; intervals get gradually randomly changed during the process too.
The chant of Ricercata is played in different ways by the other two voices: one with nancarrow like staccato mayor chords, and the other with solemn "tenuto" chords.
At the half of the composition, after a short two-mayor-chords suspension (G mayor and A mayor) all the material get mirrored in time and the music starts all over again at reverse. In this part modulation and transposition occur and other manipulations teke to a solemn "in memoriam" sequence of chords developed from the original Ligetian theme. You could eventually play this variation in a loop, that's why I called it "ad infinitum". For Conlon Nancarrow, in memoriam.
